    Josh,

    I've got another person with a similar
    problem, using a displacment map.
    The guy I know is animating some flowing
    liquid, and after a certain amount of
    time, it fades out. No envelope is set.
    I'm thinkin' there's a bug.
    I'll experiment with it today...
